TUESDAYS NEWSLETTER

GOOD MORNING PRECIOUS ONES

A word from Stella Young, comedian, journalist and disability advocate..(a lady with big dreams).

*    "I lead this great, rich, messy life that I love and it is frightening to know that other people value that so little".
*   "I want people to think about disability more.  I want people to think about ABLEISM in the same way they think about racism".
 *   "I think in Australia we have not solved the problem of people having the right to live with dignity, so I think that conversations about dying with dignity are premature….

Honouring the Universe – The philosophy of The Australasian Yoga Institute….

Have you heard of the Bechdel Test?  It's a new system started in Sweden I think designed to rate films in terms not only of sexual content but also by their portrayal of female characters.    The test judges the production as sexist if it fails to meet this simple criteria – does the film have at least two female characters, and if so, do they talk to each other about anything except a man?  Apparently not many mainstream films pass this test, but the important thing is that imposing this test might raise awareness rather than supply any solutions.

I was applying that test to yoga (in a round about way).   We are the opposite to the film industry – yoga is dominated by females.  How many yoga studio owners, authors, practitioners of note,  can you name, male or female?    I think that yoga is dominated by females at the practitioner end, but with regards to notable senior figures, it was easy to name both males and females.

It would be fantastic to have more males teaching yoga, and teaching yoga teachers wouldn't it.  Unlike the film industry, the only reason I couldn't name more males, is that they are not there, and neither are they applying to be there.

So go on, visit gyms, encourage those in your class, talk to people, have small "getting to know you"  seminars.  Get the guys to take yoga seriously.   It is a career.  One day it will be considered to be a profession, and we are lucky, we are in the vanguard.  Like naturopathy, in the not too distant future you will need to study for 4 years to get your yoga diploma.  I quote naturopathy because when The Southern School first opened their doors, they asked if I would like to be a naturopath…."It would take a whole year of part time study".  I was deeply into yoga at the time, and I said no.  An opportunity lost forever.  I certainly don't have four years free to do it now!

So work hard, get your qualifications, become a teacher of teachers by Affiliating with us, do whatever you have to do to be the best you can be.  It will be worth it in the future.  It is worth it now!  Don't just do the minimum – when you can have a fabulous PROFESSIONAL yoga life.

"YARN-BOMBING"
The yarn bombing group is going from strength to strength.  Not from the point of view of people joining us (we would like more), but of the creativity level of the group.  Whilst we started out knitting covers for bollards and wishing wells, the group is now doing creative stumbling, embroidery, fabric wash paintings, and all different and wonderful knitting and yarn work.  I even crochet'd a Christmas wreath for the front door. Please join us.  In January Anya is going to take us on another magical yarn adventure – "More Creative Scumbling" .  Watch this space.   (go see the ZPAGETTI on the web site)

Inspired by all this creativity, I made a Wedding Tiara for a friend over the weekend.  You know the kind of thing.  Beads, crystals, sparkles.  I was rather pleased with it actually, although it drove me slightly nuts sewing on the hundreds of beads.

HOW ABOUT AFFILIATING IN THE NEW YEAR?
You have been teaching for some time now, have a full book in your classes?  The next step is to apply for affiliation with us so that you can be a teacher training centre where you are.  We still do all the modules, the theory, but you get to teach the asanas, techniques – the hands-on stuff.

It is the natural progression, and you can set your own rates, your own school name etc – just under our banner.   Think about it and get back to me.

"You are the ruby in the heart of granite.  How long will you try to deceive us.  We can see the truth in your eyes.  So come, return to the root of the root of your own self"  (Rumi)

STUDIO CLASSES.
Thank you to all my students who let me know when they are, or are not,  coming to class.  It means I can invite a casual student to join us.    Please,  if you like coming to yoga, make a commitment not just to coming sometimes, but to coming every time you have promised to do so.  I do, you can too.

HOT STONES MASSAGE WITH JAHNE – Now that summer is here, and people are going out in the garden (and watching the cricket for days), the Hot Stone massage is becoming more popular.  It totally relaxes the back prior to any manipulation.  People struggle to get on the massage table, but slide off easily after the warmth of the stones, and then put their sox on!  Think about it.  I am available every day except Thursday, even after hours.  Email me for an appointment.  yogafirst@netcon.net.au

CHRISTMAS TIMETABLE:   Hard to believe that Christmas is once again upon us.  Our last class will be on Monday 23rd December at 6.30pm, the first class back in the new year will be Monday  6th January – usual timetable.  The first Teacher Training for the new year will be the 8th January.

CHRISTMAS FEES:
No-one likes to talk about money, BUT, now is the time to consider your Christmas budget.   Every year we get a number of folk who have left their Christmas plans to the last minute and email to ask if I wouldn't mind them not paying their fees for a few months while they "catch up".    If you haven't thought about your budget, think now.  Maybe pay your fees in advance.

THE TEACHER TRAINING VIDEOS
These are a very  important part of our teacher training Program, and even when you are through and out the other side, they provide a link into the "Mother" school and me of course.    Don't think that once you are through there is no more need to subscribe.  I think  it is even more essential.  And….If you let me know what you want to see, I will endeavour to make that part of my recording schedule – asanas or philosophy.  Whatever we do in the teaching, I can do on the video.  (Log on to the Videos on the Web site)

THE YAMAS (Our book is on etsy!)
I have just had a look,  it is beautiful.  It looks like a real book (I don't know what I expected!)  If you are interested (PDF or Ebook) , please let Debbie know, and reserve your copy.  Email us at yogafirst@netcon.net.au.   Or you can wait for it to go into the shop on our web site.  I think the cost will be $7.99, so everyone will be able to afford it.   A few students have already accessed it on ETSY where it is available as a PDF for $7.99 www.MyYogaBooks.etsy.com

MORE EBOOKS:  Now that "THE YAMAS, Simple and Serious" is up on easy, I am working on new Ebooks.    "HOW TO BECOME A YOGA TEACHER BY HOME STUDY" has just been sent to the publisher  and  I am half way through "101 WAYS TO KICK START YOUR YOGA BUSINESS and your life (via the Yamas)".  These two are $2.99 each, and available to everyone and also on Etsy (soon to be Ebooks)  www.MyYogaBooks.etsy.com

"There is no ladder to climb; there is only the first step, and the first step is an everlasting step"  Krishnamurti

REGISTRATION/INSURANCE for $275 TOGETHER!  The two!
Please check your insurance status.    Just to reiterate….This offer is NOT available without the Registration.  It is because you are Registering through us that the Insurance company was able to lower their price.  We lowered ours a little to show good faith, and Bingo! A fantastic offer.  If you don't use it, the numbers will drop making it impractical,  and we will revert to the old way and the old price (ouch!).  (Registration/Insurance on the web site)

OUR CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON HIGH-TEA.  Cost:$25

This is going to be a fun day, and like our Oaks Day function we are asking our attendees to dress up with a hat (and maybe gloves).  It will be a real Windsor Hotel Style High Tea.   To book, Phone Deb, or Email me   yogafirst@netcon.net.au

"Circle the sun and you become a sun.  Circle a  Master and you become one" (Rumi)

THE SHOP
We are up-dating our site, speeding up the shop . Because the shop has been linked to our Ebay site, it has been slow.   In the next week or so it will be redesigned so that you will go to our Yoga Beautiful  page, nominate the product that you want, and you will be taken directly to that product FAST.  It will be a huge improvement.

Instore  now – Our newest Radiant Core DVD of course. The ZPAGETTI knitting yarn in all colours.   Our best sellers are neti pots,  plus - real liquorice root tea, bands, straps, yoga mat bags, tarot cards and so on and so on.   If you have an item you would like to sell, please let me know.  We are always looking for items for the shop.  I have put up some of my tiny little sweaters which are actually "egg cosies".  I know its an old fashioned idea, but very useful.

As you know, we are agents for a wonderful environmentally friendly yarn called ZPAGETTI.  I have been knitting wreaths out of this yarn..  They look fantastic with a few bells and ribbons.   The cost of a ball is $18.95 but they are huge balls, and only 4 are needed for a standard yoga mat.  You can get 4 wreaths (or more depending on size), from one ball.

This new yarn is also great to knit bags, cushions, fruit bowls, rugs etc etc.  Free pattern with the purchase of the yarn.  It knits up  fast!!!! JOIN THE STUDIO CROCHET AND KNITTING CLASSES IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A MAT BUT DON'T KNOW HOW.

Instead of having a cup and going backward and forward to the Ocean, each time just getting a cupful.  Become a cup LIVING IN THE OCEAN – the Ocean of Shakti,   the Ocean of energy.

GI/GF (?) WITH JAHNE
I am settling down with my new self.  Trying out things, testing myself (as I told you last week), and gradually coming to terms with the fact that this has to be for life.  I am a "Lifer" as far as GF is concerned.  Hard to get used to that fact.  Thank goodness there are options.  Even Olive Jones (a Macedon Restaurant), is getting a bigger and better GF menu, and can adapt recipes to suit.  It is a lovely service.  Zarby's in Woodend do that too.

THE RECIPES – "No grain no pain"
There are always recipes to be found on my blog.  Hop on over and have a look.  By the way, I made some bread from a Coles gluten free bread mix.  I added the sourdough starter (that wasn't on the directions), and the bread has been very good.  It almost tastes like the real thing.  I am going to add seeds and things to it the next time I make it – and I might even invest in a toaster! Plain white bread, even GF is not terribly appealing. Toasting anything makes it better don't you think?

For the Recipe and others go to www.mygfday.blogspot.com.au

NUT MILK BAGS have arrived, and are available in the web shop.  If you are paying more and more for nut milks why not make your own.  It is simple.  Blend your nuts with water, and strain them through the bags.  That is all there is to it.  You could add honey or vanilla (or chocolate), and save money.  Plus the resulting milk would be chemical free!  (Nut Milk Bags on the web site)

THE GARDEN:
I watered the garden yesterday, and after only one week the weeds are making great strides to take over.   I have a solar pump in the pond which is going great guns.  It is just a small one from AUTOPRO in Kyneton, but is the most efficient I have had.  I tried the Bunnings version and it was hopeless.  Pretty, but hopeless.  This one started ticking over the minute I got it out of the cardboard box – and once I got it in the water, it started to do its watery thing and hasn't stopped for breath.

YIN YOGA DVD with Paul Grilley?
They are back in stock.  The last order took 5 weeks to get here, and this order took two, so they can never again say its just the post – I think something happened at the warehouse, don't you?.

We are selling these for under $40 plus postage which may explain our turnover.  When I bought mine I paid nearly $100 for it and was pleased to do it.   So if you want a set, order now from the shop on our web site – or ring Debbie and she will post one out as soon as they come to hand  – call on Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 0354 273 518 (or order one when you come to teacher training.  (Yin Yoga Video on the Web Site)

FACEBOOK/BLOGS
I am becoming more enthusiastic, and learning more about blogs and social media, although I still haven't got the time to be there for three hours day, which I am told the "professional" bloggers see as a minimum.   To those who have asked me to be friends on LINKDIN and  GOOGLE too!!!  Well, that may not happen – I just can't do everything.  If you want to check out the GF blog, the address is www.mygfday.blogspot.com.au

I have also started a YOGA BLOG  www.myyogabeautiful.blogspot.comwww.myyogabeautiful.blogspot.com
I am putting this newsletter up on the blog after I have posted it here.  So if you want to catch up with it, again, that's where to look.

JAHNE'S MENTORING SESSIONS – "Step4th Mentoring"
Because Jahne has been teaching yoga for more than 40 years, and running a business the Buddhist way for much longer than that (and successfully) she is often asked for advice.

If you are a trainee teacher and have queries about your modules, Jahne is available for mentoring session at no charge to you, although it is helpful if you could please book your session.  However, if you wish to have Jahne help you with relationships, career, or just getting personally  "unstuck" then that is coaching/mentoring and does come with a cost. Her charge per half hour for mentoring is $75 and $65 for student teachers.  It is amazing how much you can shift in half an hour when you strip away the unnecessary chatter.  It's the Buddhist way.

YOGA AFFILIATES
Michelle, our beautiful "Yoga Guardian" is an Affiliate with us, as are Jayne Curtis in Qld. and others across Australia.   If you  are looking to start yoga teacher training soon, then sign up with one of our Affiliate Schools (or become one if you have done the training, and are teaching).

"THE WOODEND MINISTRY OF FOOD".
I am still concerned about the standard of food that is presented at Council functions and meeting across the Shire (and other Shires).   I would appreciate feedback – lots of feedback.   Please contact me at yogafirst@netcon.net.au.

STOP THE PRESSES!!!
I am seriously considering starting a YOGA BUSINESS CONNECTIONS NETWORK in major centres (obviously The Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, and Shepparton for starters – Brisbane next).

There will be a yearly joining fee, which will include

*   Entry to two YOGA BUSINESS CONNECTION/NETWORKING BREAKFASTS with me.
  • A complimentary ticket to bring a guest to one breakfast
  • Free Networking functions
  • Membership to YBCN Group
  • Discounts to our "Luncheon Circle"
  • Free Teacher Training Information sessions (bring a guest).
I haven't got it all "nutted" out yet, but I think it is needed and wanted.  Let me know what you think.  Email me on yogafirst@netcon.net.au

'A CIRCLE OF WOMEN" - (which our YARN BOMBING group is proving to be)
A CIRCLE OF WOMEN may just be the most powerful force known to humanity.  If you have one, embrace it.  If you need one, seek it.  DIVE IN, HOLD ON, LOVE IT UP.  Get naked.  Let them see you.  Let them hold you.  Let your reluctant tears fall.  Let yourself rise fierce and love gentle.  YOU WILL BE CHANGED.  The very fabric of your being will be altered by this, if you allow it.  PLEASE, PLEASE ALLOW IT (author:: Jeanette Leblanc).

Our yoga classes are the source of a CIRCLE OF WOMEN, and the luncheon functions and etc provides the fun part of our circle.  Please join in.

REGARDING DEBBIE – If you want to speak to Debbie about any aspect of the courses – she has done them, please remember that she only comes in on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  She is available on Ph: 0354 273 518.  I am always here, and available preferably on email or text because I teach.  Don't hesitate to email me and I will answer your email or text as soon as I can..
